The Moor Bag

The Moor Bag
Introducing the ‘Moor Bag’, made to order from a single piece of Oak-Tanned leather from J+FJ Bakers in Devon.
3 bags in one, the Moor Bag can be worn as a backpack, cross body or off the shoulder. Featuring a minimalist design that means you can switch between dual shoulder straps and one long cross-body strap quickly.
Internally there is a small pocket 6×5”
Variations:
Colour - a choice of 4 shades
Strap Fittings - Hand-peened copper rivets or handstiched.
Hardware - solid brass or stainless steel
(For reference the photos show a Brown Bag, with copper rivets and brass hardware and a Black Bag, handstiched with stainless steel hardware)
Process: As this is a made-to-order item production times are 4-6 weeks
I hand select each hide individually for your bag, taking into account the natural grain of the leather. The main body of the bag is constructed from bridle shoulder and all straps are made from bridle butt which has more tensile strength - perfect for hardwearing use over many years.
Oak-tanned leather takes over a year to produce, using techniques perfected over centuries. I think it is the finest bridle leather made in the UK and I’m proud to create this unique bag that will only become more beautiful with age. Full-grain leather will display natural imperfections such as marks, scars and colour differences, no 2 bags are the same.
Size:
W 12”, H 10”, D 5”

Process:
The entire piece is built by hand from my workshop. The leather is measured and cut in order to incorporate the natural markings of the hide. The raw edges are bevelled and burnished using beeswax balm to form smooth strong edges that will wear naturally over time. I use the saddle stitch technique where 2 needles are used simultaneously with a single piece of thread. This creates a very strong bond and the stitch is unlikely to ever unravel.
What is Vegetable-Tanned Leather?
The ancient craft of naturally tanning leather is complex and fascinating. Only natural materials such as tree bark are used to tan the leather, a process which can take several months. Veg-tan leather is beautiful, often displaying the history of life through scars and imperfections. The material will develop a wonderful patina unique to each owner and after years become a treasured object.
